If you want to connect to database outside of Base. You must have a Mysql JDBC drivers (mysql Connector Java 3) installed on your machine and registered them.
1. First down load the mysql Connector for Java copy it to /usr/lib/java/lib.
2. Open swriter then click Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Java.
3. Click on the ClassPath button.
4. Click Add Archive button.
5. Then select the file you just copied.

You should now be able to open a MySQL database with sbase.
